ESCC Hall of Fame inducts 13 on April 11
A pair of the standouts have excelled in both the playing and coaching arena. Current Carmel Catholic Assistant Athletic Director Sarah Doyle captained two gymnastics state titles as a Corsair athlete, and has coached four Carmel teams to state crowns in the last two decades. Notre Dame and Benedictine University four-year star in both baseball and basketball Jeremy Schoenecker recently coached the Loyola Academy women’s basketball team to the IHSA Class 4A state title. Success for some inductees reached the national level, as Joliet Catholic’s Annemarie Hickey earned Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year honors while leading the Angels to two state titles… then eventually an All-American career in pacing Wisconsin to an NCAA national crown. A pair of Benet Academy standouts did much more than lead the Redwings to IHSA state championships. Basketball standout Kathleen Doyle was named Ms. Basketball in Illinois and was a McDonald’s All-American nominee before copping All-American honors at Iowa. A high school All-American in volleyball, Meghan Haggerty was a four-year starter and All-American nominee at Nebraska. Saint Viator golfer Daniel Stringfellow is also familiar with IHSA state success. Prior to making two NCAA championship appearances with Auburn, the former Lion won the 2009 IHSA individual state crown and helped lead his team to three IHSA titles. Great athletes don’t reach brilliant heights without great mentors. The Hall of Fame class also includes longtime (42 years) Nazareth Academy coach/administrator Dennis Moran, who has filled roles as President, Athletic Director and coach in baseball, football and swimming. Tennis coach Scott Bodnar also made the grade from Marian Catholic, where he has guided men’s and women’s teams, including the 2011 men’s ESCC title team and four IHSA sectional championships. The inductee list continues of ESCC athletes who have succeeded well beyond high school years, including Joliet Catholic’s James Randle (All-State football running back, first team Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at Northern Michigan), Marist’s Brooke Wyderski (All-State and record holder in softball, four-year basketball athlete, Big 10 second team in softball at Wisconsin) and Notre Dame’s William Stanton (baseball, wrestling and football MVP at ND, Outstanding Senior Athlete in baseball and football at Valparaiso). Also, Saint Patrick’s Anthony Scala (All-State basketball, Lewis University All-Decade Team and record-setting three-point shooter) and Saint Viator’s Denise Walker (ESCC basketball Player of the Year, Lions’ all-time third leading scorer, two decades on St. Viator coaching staff). Two IHSA state champion 2014 anniversary teams will be recognized at the April 11 event as well, including Benet Academy IHSA 4A women’s volleyball and Nazareth Academy IHSA 5A football. Tickets reservations ($50) for the 7 p.m. dinner (6 p.m. reception) on April 11 may be made through any of the ESCC school athletic departments and more information and history are also available on the ESCC web site at www.eastsuburbancc.com. |
